By Liz Cunningham – The Heart Space
The term Mind-Body has been around for many years and it’s widely understood that whatever happens in our mind affects our nerves, which affect our muscles, which affects our movement.
A Body-Mind approach explores the reverse; how moving muscles, moves nerves, quietens our mind, opens our heart and connects us to our spirit, our intuitive connection to our soul.
When the here and why dance together
For me, mindful movement is the consciousness of when the HERE and WHY are dancing together; grounding, pausing, centering in our sacred body, through our heart.
It takes us deeply inward into the infinite energy, authenticity and flow that exists when blending spirit and flesh. In this inner space of presence, we experience physical balance and vitality, emotional choice and freedom from old patterns, mental clarity and creativity, spiritual essence and impact.
The mystery of us as human beings moving through life is that we are pure consciousness at our core in a package of vulnerable flesh, blood and bones. Mindful movement is a way of shifting the history in our body; the stories, beliefs, conditioned fears and perspectives – naming them, feeling them, moving through them, and moving them through.
Connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit
Emotions are the body’s way of bringing energetic information to our awareness creating a bridge between the body and what the subconscious mind is processing. Mindful Movement anchors our awareness in the present, and allows us to pay attention as we experience the body’s reaction through how we feel and move. Mindful movement is sensory-based, connecting the body, mind, emotions and spirit in a way that aligns our inner human being and external human doing.
As described in the Way of the Peaceful Warrior – It takes courage to live in this world and it takes courage to love in this World. It’s not about morals or moral concepts – it’s about choice, action and consequence. It’s about learning and choosing how to fully embody our spirit – our human BEINGness as we move through the DOINGness.
Mindful Movement takes us into a new understanding of Doing, that we are more than just physical entities moving through life. There is an energy involved and our energy doesn’t stop at the boundary of our skin. Each human is an energy field that broadcasts and receives energy.
The ripple effect
How we move affects how we feel. How we feel affects how we think. How we think affects how we move and so the embodied expansion or contraction of this unfolding energy becomes how we dance with life, mindfully or not. Our most profound mindfulness isn’t gained in isolation and special circumstances but by staying present in our bodies to our thoughts, feelings and actions as we move through our experiences of daily living.
So when your head is leading you one way and your feet another, drop into your heart and dance to the music of your heart and your body will follow. Mindful movement is a tuning inward to the music and rhythm of your own true essence, the song of your heart, so that you remember to live who you truly are, how to move, where to begin, how to dance with life, how to be consciousness in action.
What if you trust that the impulse to move in a way that will serve you and the world, will bubble up from deep within and will guide and shape your form?
